CORRECT choice OF GRANITE MONUMENT
the quality of a material
Monumental architecture is very exacting to the selection of natural stone. The strength of granite is mainly influenced by its structure which can be of three types: fine-grained (with a fraction size of up to 2 mm), medium-grained and coarse-grained. The most valuable is fine-grained granite. It is less prone to splits and more convenient to handle.
The structure of the stone is easily determined visually when considering samples of materials provided by the seller. You need to choose a finished part that has an unpolished side, where the grains and impregnations of the stone are clearly visible.
Granite which has inclusions, strongly evolved by large sizes (those are the place of potential microcracks) is undesirable for use.
Carrying out inspection of samples of finished products, pay more attention to the identification of chips at the ends, various irregularities and defects of polishing, the use of cosmetic methods of masking defect.
The most common type of tombstone is a stele. It is relatively easy to make and install, inexpensive to manufacture, has enough space to accommodate epitaphs and photographs on it.
The most successful solution (but more expensive) is to order tombstones. All their elements – the base, the stele, the tombstone, the vases, the fence and even the tile underfoot – are made of granite. Such complexes are more durable, because all their elements are mounted on oneon basis and securely fastened to each other. This increases the service life of each part separately and reduces the frequency of repairs for the whole composition.
Color and invoice
The black color of granite stone is the most common in nature, but far from the only one. Granites of various deposits have their original colors and textures. The most popular raw material from which tombstones are made is gabbro – a rock similar in composition to granite, having colors from gray to black and a beautiful uniform texture. The lighter color on the chips in relation to the polished surface of the gabbro makes it possible to successfully apply sandblasting and water-jet engraving on it. In addition to gabbro, manufacturers widely use other granite rocks as well – labradorites and granite gneiss.
Ordering a monument in a handicraft workshop is not a rare mistake. Being tempted by low prices, the buyer risks getting a fake which will resemble a product of granite only in appearance. And if the monument is made of granite, it is evident that it is cheap, mined in a disruptive way and with lots of microcracks invisible to one’s eye. Having stood just a few years in the open air, such a product will need at least a serious repair or even a replacement.
HOW NOT TO BE decieved BY BUYING A GRANITE MONUMENT?
First. Order only from manufacturers. In the Ukrainian market, 83% of granite production is located in the city of Korostyshev, Zhytomyr region. If you hear another area of production – check up.
Second. Cracks. Granite monument is not a cheap item. The price starts from $ 200 for a mini monument and comes to $ 20000 for a memorial complex. Pay for quality. Granite is a natural stone that has a tendency to crack. When inspecting a monument, carefully inspect the cleaned-up granite surface for cracks.
Third. The quality of the stone. If you pay for the quality and hear the phrase from the manufacturer: “We will make you a monument “ Buka” first-grade stone,” it is easy to check. The “Buka” gabbro (rock of a stone) is a first-class stone, which has its differences:
– fine grain in comparison with the rest of the black stone (except basalt);
– monochromatic black;
– absence of spots, veins.
– The price is 30-40% higher than of the black granite.
Discuss with the manufacturer a specific deposit of stone. If you want the best quality you should order the “Buka gabbro”, if you need cheaper, the “local gabbro” will work.
Fourth. Rocks of granite. Each breed has its own price. Producers can sell to customers who don’t know a cheap breed at an expensive price. For example: “Lesniki” in most cases replace the breed “Simona”, which stands half as high as the first. You should know what the granite rock you are buying looks like. (photo 1.).
